Honor Awards Background
ASLA Georgia is proud to introduce a new way to honor our friends, colleagues, and co-workers. The newly created individual Honor Awards were created to acknowledge the leadership, stewardship, and community impacts of our membership. Modeled from the National ASLA Honor Awards, ASLA Georgia can now provide the state and national recognition that Georgia Landscape Architects deserve.
Where to start? Simply nominate a member that you feel meets the criteria set in the guidelines. It’s that easy. There are many categories and options for recognition.
In the spirt of highlighting Georgia’s Landscape Architects, the top Honor Award is named after one of our profession’s pioneers and landmark professionals. Clermont Huger Lee was the first registered female Landscape Architect in Georgia, and yet many aren’t aware of her contributions to the profession. ASLA Georgia is proud to honor our past, and highlight the professionals that enabled us to practice today.
CLERMONT "MONTY" HUGER LEE
1914- 2006
From 1951 to 1972, Lee developed and oversaw the renovations of five of Savannah’s historic city squares (Green, Madison, Troup, Warren, and Washington Squares), which were integral to Oglethorpe’s original plan. Having joined the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1950, she worked with Hubert Bond Owens (who headed the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia) to establish the Georgia State Board of Landscape Architects and was the fourth landscape architect (and the first woman) to be registered in the state.
